Rare Species


 

A rare species is a group of organisms, plant or animals, that are very uncommon or scarce. A species may be designated rare in a state but not necessarily rare in the country or the world. Designation of rare species may be made by an official body such as a country or a state. In Tennessee the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is responsible for designating rare plant species while the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is responsible for designating rare animal species.
